Convert PDF tables to Excel

Retyping a table from a PDF is slow and error-prone. If the PDF contains real text, the tables can be pulled out directly.

1. Check it's a text PDF

Try selecting a number in the PDF. If you can't, it's a scan: run OCR PDF first.

2. Convert

Open PDF to Excel and choose the file. Each page becomes its own sheet.

3. Tidy up

Check merged cells, headers and totals. Complex layouts may need a little cleanup.

Questions

Why are all my numbers in one column?

Tables without clear column spacing are hard to split. Check the sheet and adjust the columns by hand where needed.
